Live with Kelly and Mark

‘Live’s Kelly Ripa Tells Rob Lowe He’s “Failed As A Parent”

If you think that John Owen Lowe has seen all of his father Rob Lowe‘s movies — think again.

The two brought some father-son energy on Wednesday’s Live with Kelly and Mark. Once they sat down with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Ripa couldn’t help but note that John Owen is “literally a chip off the old block.”

Rob quipped, “Well, he’s stolen my earring from St. Elmo’s Fire!”

Ripa replied that she “noticed that” but claimed she “wasn’t going to bring it up,” as John Owen said, “That’s all he can talk about.”

Rob then turned it over to the studio audience, asking if his son “look[s] a little bit” like he did playing Billy Hicks in the iconic 1985 film. Following a round of applause, Ripa teased that John Owen “just needs the saxophone and the bad attitude” to fit the bill. However, Rob revealed that his son has “never seen” St. Elmo’s Fire.

John Owen confirmed, “I’ve never seen it. How can you steal something if you’ve never seen it?”

Although John Owen said he’s “sorry,” this revelation still shocked the two co-hosts, particularly Ripa.

“What does that mean? You have failed as a parent,” she told Rob.

John Owen joked, “It’s hard for me to get invested in it because I have to see his face throughout the whole movie.”

As his father pouted alongside him, John Owen added, “I’m sure you did great. I’m sure you’re really good in it.”

Consuelos assured him that his father “was great” in the film. Ripa teased, “Rob, do you need a tissue?”

“I do,” Rob quipped. “Well you know, it’s like, your kids. They don’t care.”

Meanwhile, Ripa argued that the movie is “culturally, the most important movie of all time.”

Rob quipped, “There’s The Godfather, and then there’s St. Elmo’s Fire.”

Consuelos, who professed his appreciation for The Outsiders to Ralph Macchio on Tuesday’s (July 23) episode of Live, asked John Owen, “You’ve seen The Outsiders, though, right?”

John Owen noted that he has, but still got in another jab at his father.

“They do make you watch it in school,” he said.

Later on, he disclosed that he’s also never seen Youngblood, but redeemed himself when he correctly answered which sport Lowe’s Dean Youngblood plays in the movie. Ripa proposed that John Owen come over to watch a marathon of his “dad’s greatest hits.”

“You need to see where you’re headed, where you’re going,” she explained.

John Owen teased, “He’s too shirtless in that movie. I don’t want to see that.”
