Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Set Image Teases Voit’s Unexpected Role After Getting Arrested

Zach Gilford’s Elias Voit may have a new role in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 as revealed in a set image. When the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) made the jump from CBS to Paramount+ for the revival, Emily Prentiss’ team was given darker and more complicated cases to solve. On the heels of the pandemic, their first mission was to take down a network of serial cases spearheaded by Sicarius, who turned out to be Voit. While he was arrested in the Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1 finale, the Unsub’s story is not yet finished.

Gilford is also directing the same episode. That being said, this particular image suggests that Voit will be out of prison, at least at some point in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2. It’s currently uncertain, however, when this particular moment will happen in the Paramount+ revival, but Voit not in FBI’s custody for whatever reason is an unexpected turn of events.

Although Sicarius’ serial killer network was already taken down, the BAU is facing a bigger mystery that revolves around the so-called Gold Star. In the Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1 finale, it did seem like Voit was confident that his knowledge of the matter would be great leverage for him against the FBI. If he does get out under some kind of arrangement, it’s likely because what he knows is far more important for the bureau to crack this bigger mystery. So while Prentiss may be unhappy about it, she may not have a choice but to play Voit’s game.

Perhaps, the arrival of Jason Gideon’s wife could help the BAU better understand Voit in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2. Unlike regular Unsubs, he is conniving and smart, making it more difficult to read him. With Matthew Gray Gubler’s Dr. Spencer Reid seemingly not yet reclaiming his old FBI post, Prentiss can help elsewhere. Whether this mystery will be tackled throughout the next full 10 episodes of the Paramount+ thriller is currently uncertain, but since it’s being set up as a massive conspiracy, the series may take longer to solve it.

It’s unknown if there will be another new case introduced in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, or if its story will only revolve around the lingering mystery of Gold Star. The BAU has been undermanned for quite a while now. If Voit proves to be more sinister than he is now, it may be time for Prentiss to call some reinforcements, ideally someone familiar like Shemar Moore’s Derek Morgan or maybe even Thomas Gibson’s Aaron Hotchner.
