Will Trent’s Season 2 Trailer Introduces This Is Us’ Susan Kelechi Watson as a Potential Love Interest
The Will Trent drought is almost over.
ABC has released a full-length trailer for Season 2 of the hit crime drama, which introduces This Is Us vet Susan Kelechi Watson as a member of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s bomb squad… and a potential love interest for Will.
As TVLine was first to report, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. vet Clark Gregg also will appear in Season 2 as Arthur Highsmith, an accountant who gets caught up in a bad situation and tries to skip town. Gregg makes his debut in the aforementioned trailer as he tries to run from Special Agent Trent.
Read on to get the latest news on Season 2 of Will Trent, including the premiere date, casting updates and plot details.
WHAT IS WILL TRENT ABOUT?
Based on Karin Slaughter’s best-selling novels and led by TVLine Performer of the Year finalist Ramón Rodríguez, the crime drama centers on Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Having been “abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system,” Will now uses his “unique point of view in the pursuit of justice and has the highest clearance rate in the GBI,” according to the official logline. (TVLine readers gave Season 1 a rare average grade of “A+.”)
HOW DID WILL TRENT SEASON 1 END?
Will Trent’s Season 1 finale re-contextualized Will’s abandonment as a newborn. As it turned out, GBI deputy director Amanda Wagner (played by Sonja Sohn) not only knew Will’s mother — a sex worker named Lucy Morales who died during childbirth — but rescued Will after he was left for dead by serial killer James Ulster.
Amanda had even intended to raise Will as her own. Alas, adoption wasn’t feasible for a single woman at the time. She thought she’d turned him over to a good family, and deeply regretted that his childhood took a different path. She did, however, give Will one thing: her mother’s maiden name, Trent.
DID ANGIE SURVIVE WILL TRENT SEASON 1 FINALE ATTACK?
Will Trent Season 1 left the fate of Will’s on-again/off-again girlfriend Angie Polaski (played by Erika Christensen) up in the air. Though she survived a serious beatdown at the hands of James Ulster, her doctor offered no confirmation, either way, that Angie would overcome her injuries and avoid paralyzation.
The Season 2 trailer, however, confirms that Angie is not paralyzed. She is in recovery and determined to get back to work.
WHEN DOES WILL TRENT SEASON 2 PREMIERE?
Will Trent Season 2 premieres Tuesday, Feb. 20, at a new time — 8/7c — where it will lead into new episodes of The Rookie (entering Season 6) and The Good Doctor (entering its seventh and final season). Episodes will stream next day on Hulu.
In Season 2, Episode 1, “a car bomb ignites a thrilling investigation for Will and a bomb expert, revealing more than meets the eye,” according to the official synopsis. “As intrigue unfolds, Angie (Erika Christensen) battles to return to work, Ormewood’s (Jake McLaughlin) home life complicates, and Faith (Iantha Richardson) develops her relationship with Luke (Ser’Darius Blain).”
WHO’S RETURNING FOR WILL TRENT SEASON 2?
In addition to Ramon Rodriguez, Season 1 cast members Erika Christensen (as Angie Polaski), Iantha Richardson (as Faith Mitchell), Jake McLaughlin (as Michael Ormewood) and Sonja Sohn (as Amanda Wagner) will all return as series regulars for Season 2.
WHO IS CRICKET IN WILL TRENT SEASON 2?
Cricket is played by This Is Us actress Susan Kelechi Watson. According to TV Insider, Cricket is “a bomb expert who is really good at her job and tries to keep everyone calm in high-stakes situations.” The Season 2 trailer also hints at a potential romance between Will and Cricket.
No word yet if Watson will share scenes with Iantha Richardson — aka Faith Mitchell — who previously recurred on This Is Us as the grown-up version of Randall and Beth’s daughter Tess.
WHO IS ARTHUR IN WILL TRENT SEASON 2?
Arthur Highsmith is played by Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor Clark Gregg. The character is described as “an accountant who gets caught up in a bad situation and tries to skip town.” He will appear in Season 2’s first two episodes.
