Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Set Video Reveals First Look At Controversial Character’s Return
A new set video for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 reveals the first look at the return of the show’s most controversial character. Despite the delay due to the dual Hollywood strikes of 2023, filming for the Paramount+ police procedural has been quietly progressing for a few months now. No release date has been set, and specific plot details are still being kept tightly under wraps, but thanks to content from the set shared by those involved, the public has an early peek at the new season. That includes an advanced look at the returning cast.
The cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 partakes in a viral social media trend, such as Ryan-James Hatanaka, who plays the controversial Tyler Green. Check out the video from the official Criminal Minds: Evolution TikTok account below:

In the video, the core BAU members do the “of course” challenge, saying specific things to their characters. Aside from them, however, the fun Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 BTS video also includes Zach Giiford who plays Elias Voit, and Hatanaka who plays the Green — Penelope Garcia’s one-time fling partner.
Why Criminal Evolution Season 2 Brings Back Tyler Green
The BAU Will Have To Work With Green In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2
Not only will Hatanaka return as Green, but he will also have an expanded role in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2. This is after he debuted as one of the new players in the freshman season of the Paramount+ revival. Green was able to infiltrate Elias Voit’s serial killer ring, and stealthily roped Garcia and the BAU into helping him take down Sicarius. In season 2, BAU recruits Tyler as a consultant since their case with Voit is far from over despite the Unsub already now in FBI custody.
Despite the BAU working with Green, it’s worth remembering that there’s still a lot that isn’t known about the character
It’s curious if Green’s return is somehow linked to the show delving deep into the team’s history. Season 2 is revisiting Jason Gideon’s legacy by introducing his ex-wife. It’s unclear if other Criminal Minds characters from the past will return, but it would be impressive if the writers could find a link between new players and people from the BAU’s past. If not, Green’s involvement may be purely tied to Voit and the ongoing mystery of Gold Star. The show further exploring his whirlwind romance with Garcia will add more drama to an already tense
Despite the BAU working with Green, it’s worth remembering that there’s still a lot that isn’t known about the character. Considering this, Emily Prentiss and her team need to be vigilant when dealing with him since he may be part of a bigger conspiracy relating to Gold Star. If not, Garcia should still keep her distance from him in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, considering their past tryst.
Will Tyler Green Become A Permanent Member Of The BAU?
Prentiss’ BAU Can Use Some New Members
The BAU recruiting Green means that his knowledge is far too important for the case that they are currently handling. Considering the stealthy way that he roped Garcia in to make sure the FBI team was involved in taking down Sicarius, not all the profilers are fans of his. Add to that the controversial romantic relationship he’s had with Garcia, and it’s understandable why some of Prentiss’ people won’t be keen on having him around. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like they have a choice in the matter, especially if what he has to offer will help figure out the Gold Star mystery.
Once the initial need for Green is finished, however, potentially at the end of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, it’s curious if there’s any interest in bringing him aboard the BAU full-time. Considering the absences of Reid and Simmons, Prentiss’ squad could use some help in cracking their next case. Despite the divisive reception to the character, it does seem like Hatanaka fits well with the evolving cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution, so it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that he is officially offered the job of being a permanent profiler for the FBI.
How Green’s Return Impacts Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2
Alvez Needs To Prepare For His Biggest Competition
Beyond being useful to the BAU’s current case, Green’s return also means drama within the team. Garcia’s decision to be involved with him already drew ire from some of her teammates, but while Prentiss has likely forgiven her for her mistake, having to deal with Green around could bring up issues about this. It is dubious that the BAU will turn its back on Garcia, but things might be awkward in the office if they’re all huddled together.
Green’s return, however, will have the biggest impact on the possible romance between Garcia and Alvez. The original Criminal Minds show on CBS ended with the beginning of a possible love affair between the couple after Garcia resigned from the BAU. In the revival, however, it was revealed that their first date went so horribly that they both decided to walk away from the potential love connection. Garcia breaking up with Green in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1 felt like the beginning of her giving Alvez again, but that may no longer happen now.
