Criminal Minds: Evolution Showrunner Teases What’s to Come in Season 18

With the second season of Criminal Minds: Evolution supposedly going to be out very soon, it is expected that fans will get heated up over what it might bring along. In an interview with Collider, showrunner Erica Messer reveals that following the season 2 finale, the writers’ room is currently underway and work in progress for season 2 is being done. She discusses elements such as whether notorious villain Elias Voit is dead and if other key characters will return.

Asked how much of the next season has been planned, Messer revealed, “We’re maybe halfway through the writers’ room for the season. We’ve got quite a bit, but not everything. It still feels like that fluid time because we’re not in production yet, so nothing is set in stone yet.” This insight lets viewers know that while significant amounts have been made, there are still chances for new developments and changes as the season continues to take shape.

The question in fans’ minds is whether the most feared villain he made us meet, Elias Voit, will return. Messer corroborated, “Oh, yeah. He’s not done. I feel like, at the end of every season, he just finds a new way to cause trouble.” Knowing Voit is going to return will keep audiences on the edge of their seats, because now the team will have to deal with his dangerous and unpredictable nature more intensely.

The ending of Gold Star leaves fans wondering: what’s next for characters like Jade, Pete Bailey, and Mila. He addressed this, saying, “We wanted to be clear that the Gold Star investigation is complete. There won’t be anything dangling from that, and those three characters are so heavily tied to that storyline. Right now, we’re not seeing bringing them back, but I would never say never.” That would indicate that, even though these characters are not currently planned to return, the door remains open for their possible reappearance in future storylines.

Clean Breaks and Future Storylines

“It feels complicated to say, on one hand, ‘Gold Star is over,’ and then, ‘By the way, here are some Gold Stars.’ That’s where we are right now. It just feels like we wanna have a clean break,” said Messer. Besides the sense of closure, which will be imbued with the finale, it offers a fresh break for new storylines and character development arcs the show can move toward without having to drag the weight of the past.

As season two of Criminal Minds: Evolution keeps trudging forward, viewers can expect a bevy of old faces with new dangers. Certainly, the continuing battle with Elias Voit will take center stage in much of the action — drama that will turn more than a few stomachs. More recent changes in the writers’ room seem to suggest that plenty of opportunities still exist for surprises and twists.

Although the details for the new season are not nailed down, the insights from Erica Messer do give a very hopeful view of what is to come with Criminal Minds: Evolution and its success. With half the season planned and the return of a formidable villain, this show will no doubt entertain audiences once again with another season full of suspense and intrigue. Surprises will be a part of things as always. Fans should just be prepared for them and keep watching for updates as the writers’ room continues and production begins.
