Bosun Iain MacLean Attempts To Flatter Captain Sandy so he doesn’t get fired – “This is why she is the Captain!”
Below Deck Mediterranean season 9’s Bosun Iain MacLean has been struggling throughout the season, but can his flattery of Captain Sandy Yawn on social media change her tune about him now? Iain and the rest of the crew aboard Mustique have had an interesting time on the superyacht as Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 has gotten underway. After being accused of faking his performance because of how poorly he was doing on the superyacht, Iain has been one of the crew members to come under fire this season. With a recent Instagram story, he may be trying to curry favor.
“This is why she is the Captain!”
In a recent Instagram story, Iain reshared a post from the Below Deck account showing off Captain Sandy navigating an incredibly difficult docking. Sharing the post along with his own thoughts, Iain shared, “this is why she is the Captain!” as Sandy navigated through some difficult conditions. While Iain has been doing poorly managing the exterior team on Below Deck Mediterranean season 9, he seems to at least understand what he’s doing from a technical standpoint. Despite his knowledge, Captain Sandy has been frustrated with the way the Bosun has been operating and could enjoy his compliments on social media.
Has Bosun Iain Maclean Made Any Improvements On Below Deck Med?
Iain’s performance on Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 has been lackluster at best, and at times has been so poor that many believed he was faking his performance in order to create drama aboard the superyacht. With Iain’s performance having been so poor throughout the first charters of the season, many have found themselves surprised that he hasn’t been fired yet. As Iain has continued working as the Bosun, his delegation to the exterior team has been somewhat more clear. While Deckhands Nathan Gallager, Gael Cameron, and Joe Bradley have struggled with Iain, he could be improving a bit.

With Iain’s performance improving a bit, things could be turning around for the Bosun, but it’s likely that he’s still not advanced enough for Captain Sandy to put her trust in him. Even if Iain is getting better in his role as Bosun, his performance won’t be able to recover enough for Captain Sandy to feel comfortable with him guiding her exterior team and working as her second hand. It feels like the right decision for Captain Sandy to fire Iain and find a Bosun that she can trust as she moves through the charter season.
As Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 continues, Iain and several of the other crew members aboard Mustique are on thin ice as the charter season advances. With the Stews in a long-drawn-out feud over Deckhand Joe, there’s some struggle keeping the peace in the interior department, while Chef Johnathan Shillingford has been similarly accused of faking his performance as it’s been so abysmal. It’s possible that Captain Sandy may need to make a few cuts before Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 comes to an end.
