A Huge Hypocrite: Chef Johnathan Shillingford intentionally downplayed Captain Sandy After Allegedly Faking Poor Performance
Below Deck Mediterranean star Iain Maclean’s recent TV interview put him in a bad light as his weak performance as a Bosun continues to receive backlash every week. Iain joined the Bravo franchise during Below Deck Med season 9, which is currently airing. Despite having the top job with the exterior crew on board the Mustique, Iain has come under fire in recent weeks, with the Below Deck star even being accused of faking his poor performance. Chef Johnathan “Jono” Shillingford also received the same treatment on social media. So far, they haven’t been able to improve their reputations.
Below Deck Med ‘s Iain Maclean shouldn’t be speaking out against Captain Sandy’s supposed weaknesses when he hasn’t dealt with his own poor performance yet.
Both Iain and Jono appeared on Andy Cohen’s Bravo talk show Watch What Happens Live to explain their recent behavior and defend their actions. However, Iain came off as a hypocrite after he was asked about Captain Sandy Yawn’s weaknesses.
During a game called The Shady Sponge Cake, an animated cake asked Iain and Jono several shady questions. One of the questions forced the Below Deck Med cast members to think of ways Captain Sandy could improve. Iain had a hard time coming up with an answer at first, with Andy helping them out by saying the captain needed to keep track of her shirts. Iain finally came up with an answer, saying, “Maybe just a bit better with deadline timing,” which caused a strong reaction of surprise from the studio audience.
What Can Iain Maclean Do To Improve Below Deck Med Performance?
Bosun Iain & Chef Jono Are In Hot Water On Below Deck Med
Iain attempted to save himself during a later question when he and Jono were asked about which Below Deck Med cast member they wouldn’t want to work with again. Iain and Jono replied at the same time, so it was hard hearing Iain’s answer, but it was clear that he would be fine working with the current crew again, which Jono agreed with. “I would honestly love working with everyone again,” he said.
Iain hasn’t shown any signs of improvement, with seven Below Deck Med season 9 episodes having aired so far. The nautical spin-off seems to be about halfway through the season, so there’s still time to right the ship. Captain Sandy keeps calling out Iain’s poor performance, but the Bosun still isn’t making much of an effort to prove to the captain that he deserves to keep his job. Sandy already has a backup chef lined up in case she needs to fire Jono; maybe she needs to prepare for a new exterior crew member if Iain needs to be fired.
In the most recent episode of Below Deck Med season 9, Captain Sandy asked Iain if he’d thought about who the lead Deckhand should be. That’s when the Bosun admitted he already gave that position to Joe Bradley at the start of the charter season, which the captain had no idea about. That was a major lack of communication on Iain’s part, especially since Nathan Gallager has impressed the captain so much that she believes he should be the lead Deckhand instead. If Iain suffers from one more misstep, it might be time to say goodbye.
